I'm bringing Book Club back!

Let's all admit it ladies, we've really fallen off track. While yes we've had a lot of fun in all our meetings the past few months...we've been really bad about actually reading the book.

So, here's what we need...we need a host for February Book Club and a book. A really good easy book that everyone is going to read. Please comment below or email suggestions. Let's pick one soon so everyone has lots of time to read!!

Kris suggested An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin.

Thanks so much for hosting Tiffany, it was a fun night!

Great food, great wine, great friends and great gifts. All the usuals.

There were lots of good gifts this year!

But nothing really compared to this gift. I think everyone gave it a try!

We were so happy to have surprise guest in from NYC.

Lots of pictures!

A first snow fall.

And a Champagne Toast!

Book Club Girls Night

The original plan was to play some games but unfortunately...that didn't happen due to the tiny Catch Phrase we had.

Instead we ate and drank a lot!

And had a dance party of some sort?

The night was really fun! I know everyone had fun due to the 15 bottles of wine, 1 bottle of champagne and 2 half drank bottles of red that were scattered around the apartment in the morning.

(not pictured Tiff, sorry we took this after you left)

Next up BCCP!

October Book Club

It's recap time!

Thanks to Elizabeth for hosting a fun night! For those of you that didn't make it, Elizabeth's new place is great! It's on the 52nd floor, it's way up in the sky, it's super cute! And the spread was excellent, I will post some recipes later.

Unfortunately, only one member read the book and it's really unfortunate because it sounded like a book we could all relate to (maybe not the saving money for a year but the career girls in the city part). Kathy also contacted the authors of the book and they sent her discussion questions. Oh well, we will try again next month, wait did we even pick a book for next month? Oops.

Well first off we have a few things for Book Club to celebrate this month, congrats to Rachel on the new job, congrats to Elizabeth for taking part in a boot camp, congrats to Kathy on the new home in Lincoln Square, and yeah to Lisa for booking a big trip to Europe in December. And of course a big woot woot to the two new members for attending last night, I hope you liked your first Book Club!!

Since we didn't talk about the book, here is what we did talk about...nuns, the history of Book Club, Halloween costumes, this blog, hair removal (it wouldn't be book club without this topic), dating, clubbin' in the D, winning contests, breast feeding in public, broken thumbs, juicy stories about the "down low" (too juicy to share on the blog- sorry ladies that missed last night), Bridezillas, roadies, Kim Kardashian, plastic surgery, eharmony, wine consumption on weeknights, Carmen Harlen, and best man speeches.

Memorable Quotes of the Night:
"You feel like a gazelle amongst a bunch of lions."
"You don't have a beard around your nipples."
"I don't want a pen pal."
"The club was all white, the decor, me and the decor were white."
"Are you missing my black teeth?" -via text from Katie

Weirdest pic ever! Ha!

Elizabeth didn't make it to her "Other BC" this morning.

Well (mom voice), sounds like that was a fun time.

Even Our Pets are Reading!

Not only does our Book Club help all of us read more, but we've all noticed some strange behavior from our beloved pets. They've all become avid readers!

Jasper is currently reading The Stranger Beside Me, he's gearing up for Halloween.

Annie is currently reading Water for Elephants, she loves animals. Look at that stack, you go girl!

Joseph is currently reading Schopenhauer Cure, he is one intellectual cat!

Lexi is currently reading All We Ever Wanted Was Everything, she loves her some good chick-lit!

Jake is currently reading Women of the Pleasure Quarters, as you can see he isn't really enjoying it. Sorry Jake!

Minks is currently reading Eat Pray Love, he's a romantic at heart.

Kindles are now $139

Do we all need one of these for Christmas?

I am thinking...yes!

Friday, September 24, 2010

We did it again!

Once again our Book Club has picked a book that will become a movie, or in this case a television series!

You can read the article here.

Bruckheimer TV and Warner Bros. TV have received a put pilot order from ABC for a project inspired by the book "The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World." The femmes who penned the book, published in May by HarperCollins, maintain the LostGirlsWorld blog, which may also provide some fodder for the series.

Now the real question is who is actually reading this book? :)

Don't forget we also need to pick a date and the next hostess!

Book Club Beyond Borders

written by Guest Blogger Kathy S.

Contrary to the early prediction that our Book Club would have “the shelf life of a dairy product,” BC has now flourished for years and is spreading its influence across the country. Starting with a group of Michigan transplants in Chicago, moving north to Minnesota (Amanda), east to New York City (Jamie), and now south to TEXAS!

After seeing a ReadBetweentheWines posting on Facebook, an old Marquette friend living in McAllen, TX, reached out to hear “EVERYTHING” about our book club so she could start her own. “I'm not sure how serious y'alls club is,” she said, “but I'm pretty sure ours will be about 50% eating/vino drinking, 30% gossiping, 20% book talking”. Sound familiar?

I gave her the lowdown on the basics, like rotating apartment locations, bringing a bottle to pass, and consuming copious amounts of dip, as well as on the more complicated matters, like the process of choosing the next book (suggesting the frequently instituted “heads down/hands up” voting approach in certain heated situations). In addition, I shared some essential things to consider when choosing a book, some of which we learned the hard way, like;

The # of pages (i.e. Edgar Sawtelle)
The unreliability of Oprah’s Book Club (i.e. Love in the Time of Cholera & Edgar again)
Hard cover vs. soft cover
The seasonality (i.e. Ted Bundy)
Who’s already read it
Who’s mom’s already read it

Much like a fine wine (or fine cheese for that matter) our Book Club has only gotten better with age and here’s hoping the new clubs formed will lead to as many new friendships, passionate discussions, and hung-over Fridays as ours has. Cheers!

Saying Goodbye

Goodbyes are no fun.

Last night we had to wish farewell to one of every one's favorite Book Club members she is off to big things in the Big Apple. Jamie is a founding father of our Book Club and brought a lot of friendships together. We will miss her so much!!

So last night we didn't have a book to discuss, we just wanted to get together to wish Jamie good luck on her new adventure in NYC.

Topics of discussion included wedding dresses, wedding rings, New York City (duh), Billy Mulivill (Jamie's furture BFF), accents, face vs. furs, curly hair, work, getting fired, firing coworkers, Halloween, real estate, Disneyworld, red underwear, skinny jeans, dogs/cats, Panko bread crumbs, 30th Birthday parties, Helen & Jack moving to Chicago and maybe for the first time ever there were a few tears shed at BC and a sing along. Yes, a sing along, I guess don't mention Orphan and Annie in the same sentence around this group.

I really don't know what to write about Jamie leaving Chicago and Book Club, other then she will be truely missed. And a BCNYC weekend could be in the works. :)

(This image has been edited for a number of reasons)

We love you Jamie and wish you all the best in New York! xoxo

Also, thank you to Katie for hosting! It was a last minute get together, so THANK YOU! It always seems to be a fun night when Katie's hosts, remember this?

She and this gorgeous ring need a shout out. We love ya!

Can't wait to talk wedding deets at all the next Book Clubs!

Group Picture

We have pretty much mastered the art of the self timer...we have a system. We usually take the picture right before the first person leaves, that seems to be the reminder we need to take one. We all know the rotine, there will be 3 shots.

But this month we had major issues with our group picture...

Take one...no good.

Take two...nope.

Ok once more...everyone just gather around the host.

After the nine shots this one had to be it.

One of these nights we really need to take the picture at the BEGINING of the night.

August Book Club

Let's see, since I didn't make it to work the day following Book Club I don't even know what we talked about. Does anyone remember? Other then no one read the book, and some of us were stuck in the lobby of Lisa's building half the night due to elevator issues.

Food was great as always!! And the company was fantastic as usual. Thanks for a great night Lisa!!

Let's see...topics of conversation included... Lollaplooza, dogs, Affleck/Lively rumors, company vacation policy, break-up shoes, Kardashians, engagements, Chelsea Cilton's wedding, The Bachelorette, pretty much pick up last week's copy of US Weekly and there you have it our August Book Club.

We were sad to be missing a few members but it was still a fun night. Picking a book for September was kind of an ordeal (i.e. a few fights) but we ended up with The Lost Girls. Pick up a copy today!

Friday Pop Quiz #4

Name this Book Clubber!

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

What? It's just one glass.

Giant Wine Glass

Whether you prefer chardonnay or merlot, this is the wine glass you need. You can savor the flavor all night long as this glass can hold up to a full bottle of your favorite fruit of the vine. It's just the thing our Book Club needs.

Because all that pouring is hard work. Com'on you know you're gonna drink the whole bottle.

Hall of Shame

Hall of Shame includes The Gallering (Sigs), Edgar Sawtelle (Kathy), Madame Bovary (Jamie) and Love in the Time of Cholera (repeat offender Jamie).

But nothing compares to this one...

At the time, Tiffany had a great book to read...the book Memories of Geisha was very popular during this time, but we had to be different and our Book Club read this 'gem'.

It was called Women of the Pleasure Quarters.

It was pretty much a text book you would have to read in college in a Women's Studies class. We will NEVER let Tiffany live this one down. Does anyone still have a copy? Bring it to the next Book Club!

SPOTTED!

Saturday, July 3rd
11:38pm EST
Palisades Park Country Club
A rare and unusual sighting!

Sisters found both in bed before midnight...READING!!

If you know anything about these two and Palisades then you would know staying in on a Saturday night of a Holiday weekend is a complete and total shock. Think Book Club is wearing off on them?!?!

Mini Rye Sammies

1 lb. bulk pork sausage
1 lb. Velveeta, cut into 1 inch cubes
2 tbsp. ketchup
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
1 loaf mini rye bread

Brown sausage in a heavy skillet; drain. Melt cheese over low heat, stirring frequently. Add sausage, ketchup and next 3 ingredients; mix well. Spread about 2 teaspoons of mixture on each bread slice and bake on ungreased baking sheet at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.

Blue Cheese and Toasted Pecan Spread

1 pound of good quality blue cheese, crumbled
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 cup pecans, toasted and finely chopped
1/2 cup green onions, finely chopped
1/2 cup chopped Italian parsley

Place cheese, butter, cream and garlic in food processor and process until smooth. Transfer mixture to serving bowl and fold in pecans, green onions and parsley.

Cover and chill at least 4 hours or overnight. For easier serving, remove from fridge 1 hour before serving. Serve with baguette, crackers, pears, celery or apples.

*Notes: I used a block of blue cheese, not crumble, that worked fine. Also I used a little less butter and heavy cream. Also make sure it has at least an hour out of the fridge before serving, it's very hard when you first take it out of the fridge.

June Book Club...Loft Style

We gossiped

We ate

We drank

And of course we stayed stylish even when the odds are against us

It was a good night! Everyone who fully finished The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao LOVED it. Kris Kolky even put it on her "My All Time Favorite Book List". Kathy said it "wasn't like anything she had ever read before" (in a good way) and Katie said she "laughed and cried".

Topics of conversation included Real Housewives of New York (seriously that Kelly is a wack-a-doo), bathing suits, Sex and the City 2 (i.e. the worst movie ever), dogs (puppy vs. shelter), Serbia, short sales, hair removal, socks, stress fractures, scoliosis, wetsuits, Moroccan oil, wedge sandals, and more Real Housewives of New York (Team Bethenny all the way!).

Stats
10 members attended
1 no show
4 ladies that actually read the book
5 types of cheese were served
1 foot was booted
9 bottles of wine were consumed
5 dips were served
250,000 calories were consumed
37 compliments were given
1 spill
2 outfit changes
4 July book suggestions
1 hung over tired boyfriend kicked out of his apartment
30 left over cookies brought to work

After a very emotional book suggestion round, our July Book is The Schopenhauer Cure. Lisa really pulled on everyone's heart strings and it worked! Look at your calendars, maybe July 29th?

So apparently the real action took place post BC on what is now referred to as "The Epic Red Line Home". The rumor is that four members took the red line home which included getting asked for money by a homeless woman with kids up "way past their bed time", a very interesting "miracle whip" vs "hellman's" conversation as well as Elizabeth almost getting beat up by a weird man for stepping on his baby toe.
